Research Interests : Coupled flow and thermal diagnostics, Two-phase heat transfer, Droplets/Interfaces, Nanofluids, Bioheat transfer, Non-intrusive measurements.
Time-dependent and three-dimensional distribution of fluid velocities and transported properties are required in a range of applications. However, generating such data through experiments has always been a challenge. Conventional probe-based techniques are intrusive in nature and are restricted to providing volume-averaged data only at a few select points. Time constants associated with such probes limit their applications in highly transient phenomena . Focus of our research group is to overcome this barrier of 3D unsteady whole field measurements using advanced measurement techniques that are completely inertia-free and non-intrusive. Experiments are complemented by numerical simulations. Some of the areas wherein the group has made significant impact include high heat flux management systems, nanofluids, two-phase heat transfer, coupled heat and mass transfer, droplets/interfaces and bio-heat transfer.
The group comprises of some of the highly motivated PhD and M.Tech scholars, post-doctoral fellows and project staff working in areas such as two-phase heat transfer, droplets/interfacial heat transfer, double-diffusive transport phenomena, bio-heat transfer, heat transfer enhancement. Our research findings have been published in over 120 articles in leading international journals, which include Journal of Fluid Mechanics, Physics of Fluids, International journal of Heat and Mass Transfer, Scientific Reports-Nature etc. The impact made by the group is the result of dedicated and sincere efforts of about 12 PhD students, close to 50 M.Tech students and post-doctoral fellows. These students are now well placed in leading academic institutions (IITs, NITs) and R&D sectors.

Using some of the advanced measurement techniques, coupled investigation of bubble dynamics, the associated heat transfer ratxes and real time dynamics of microlayer is being carried out under nucleate pool as well as flow boiling regimes. The studies also include the plausible role of nanoparticles in influencing the boiling heat transfer rates.
Coalescence and evaporation dynamics of sessile and/or impinging droplets on heated substrates are being investigated using non-intrusive measurement techniques. Emphasis is on coupled investigation of droplet hydrodynamics, contact line motion and evaporative heat transfer rates.
Joint investigation of flow and heat transfer in the wake region of cylinder(s) embedded within a rectangular channel. Walls of the channel are thermally active and the plausible role(s) of wake vortices in passively enhancing the heat transfer rates is being studied using Thermo-PIV technique.
These studies are concerned with developing a detailed understanding of heat transfer through biological samples using Fourier and non-Fourier heat conduction models. The modalities include photo-thermal therapy, high intensity focused ultrasound waves and cryo-surgery.
